Mixed Martial Arts
Martial arts have always been popular, but for many years most people only trained in one martial art at a time. Boxers boxed, judoka practiced judo and wrestlers wrestled. However, the question that always came up was – which martial art is best?
The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) attempted to answer this question, and pitted experts from a variety of martial arts against each other to see who was the best of the best. The answer was a surprise to many; and Royce Gracie, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighter beat the far bigger Karate expert Gerard Gordeau in less than two minutes!
Martial artists around the world sat up and took notice and began to integrate elements of other martial arts into their own training – MMA was born.
What is MMA?
Bruce Lee, often considered the original MMA fighter, summed up MMA perfectly when he said “Absorb what is useful, discard what is useless, and add what is specifically your own.” MMA participants learn a variety of martial arts methods to create a hybrid fighting system designed to employ the best offensive and defensive techniques available.
MMA fighters can punch like boxers, kick like Muay Thai fighters, throw like judoka and grapple like wrestlers and Jiu-Jitsu fighters. This means they have the perfect technique for whatever their opponent throws at them. It’s no longer a question of which martial art is best but which MMA martial artist.
Above and beyond fighting ability, MMA offers a number of benefits to anyone who trains regularly. Those benefits include:
- Increased strength and endurance
- Improved cardiovascular fitness
- Increased mobility and flexibility
- Enhanced balance, coordination, and athleticism
- Greater determination and self-discipline
- Improved eye-hand coordination
- Greater core strength
MMA training is also a great way to burn fat and lose weight, as training for MMA is very energetic and can burn upward of 600 calories per hour. Most MMA fighters have very enviable physiques and combine leanness with great muscle development. It could be argued that the MMA physique is amongst the most desirable and MMA fighters are the fittest all-round athletes around.
As well as being a much-loved sport, MMA has helped a number of celebrities get in great shape and also develop the skills necessary to be convincing heroes or villains on the silver screen. Christian Bale, Jessica Alba, Jessica Biel, Sean Patrick Flannery, Sarah Michelle Geller, Adrianna Lima, Ice-T, and Shaquille O’Nea are all big fans of MMA.
Safety and MMA
Of course, MMA, like any martial art, is not without risks. Full contact punching and kicking plus throws, joint locks, and chokes can leave you fit but battered, bruised and even injured. For some participants, these risks are justifiable bit for others the risks outweigh the benefits.
Luckily, there is now an alternative…
